ABOUT MAURITIUS |
HISTORY & GEOGRAPHICAL
LOCATION
Mauritius is a volcanic island almost
entirely surrounded by barriers of coral
reefs forming natural , safe and crystal
clear lagoons around the island.
Officially discovered by a Portuguese
navigator Pedro Mascarenhas , the island
was successively occupied by the Dutch,
the French and finally to great Britain
inn 1814. Mauritius became independent
on the 12th of March 1968 and was
proclaimed a Republic on 12 March 1992.
The island of Mauritius is situated at
approximately 2000 Kilometers to the
south east coast of Africa . The land
covers an area of 1865 square kilometers
with approximately 330 kilometers of
coastline. |

POPULATION
The population of Mauritius is made up
of people of diverse origins - Indians (
Hindus and Muslims ) , African , Chinese
and Europeans who have brought along
with them their respective cultures ,
traditions and languages . This is why
today, Mauritius is very often cited as
the perfect example of a peaceful
multiracial country .
CLIMATE
Along the coastal areas of the island ,
the temperature varies from about 23C up
to 32C and around the central part of
the island, where it is cooler, the
temperature is generally lower by 3 to 5
degrees depending on the period of the
year.The northern and western parts of
the island are normally warmer and drier
than the East and the South. |
