TIME
Mauritius and most of the hotels offer
international direct dialing facilities
to most parts of the world as well as
rapid speed fax services. Mauritius time
is 4 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time
and 3 hours ahead of mid-European time.
LANGUAGE
Most people in Mauritius are bilingual
and fluent in both English and French
even though English is the official
language. Creole , which is the island
language as well as several oriental
languages are widely spoken throughout
the island. |

CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
The allowance for duty free goods are as
follows :
Passengers over 16 years old and over
may import :
• 250 grams of tobacco ( including
cigars and cigarettes )
• 1 litre of spirits
• 2 litres of wine , ale or beer
• One quarter litre Eau de Toilette and
a quantity of perfume not exceeding
10cl.
A plant permit must be obtained from the
Ministry of Agriculture, prior to import
of any plant and must be declared upon
arrival and are subject to verification.
It is however strictly forbidden to
introduce sugarcane , soil
micro-organisms and invertebrate
animals. |

Facilities for examination
and certification of plant materials as
well as sanitary certificate and import
permit for animals are required prior to
arrival in Mauritius.
Drug trafficking is illegal and carry
very heavy penalties.
Firearms and ammunition need import
permits and must be declared on arrival. |
